St. Elizabeth of Hungary lived a long time ago, in the 13th century, in a country called Hungary. She was born into a royal family and was a princess. But more importantly, she had a big heart full of love and kindness.
- Wealthy Childhood: From a very young age, Elizabeth cared deeply about helping people who were poor and sick. She would often give away her own food and clothes to those in need, even though she was very wealthy and had lots of things.
- Help the Poor: When Elizabeth grew up, she married a kind prince named Ludwig (or Louis) of Thuringia. He supported her in her desire to help others. Together, they used their wealth and resources to build a hospital where sick people could get better and a place where poor people could find food and shelter.
- Gave kindness and respect: Elizabeth didn’t just give material things; she also gave her time and care to everyone she met. She treated people with kindness and respect, no matter who they were or what they needed.
- A Life of Prayer: Sadly, Elizabeth’s happy life with Ludwig didn’t last forever. He died when she was still very young, leaving her a widow with young children. But even in her sadness, Elizabeth continued to help others and live a life of prayer and kindness.
- Good Example: Elizabeth of Hungary is remembered as a saint because of her deep faith in God and her love for helping others. She is a great example for all of us, showing us that even kids can make a big difference in the world by being kind and generous to others.
- Feast Day: St. Elizabeth of Hungary’s feast day is November 5.
St. Elizabeth’s story teaches us about compassion, generosity, and the importance of helping those in need, inspiring them to follow her example in their own lives.
